August 13, 2008.....It's been 36 years since that day in 1972! What a great 36 years it has been! Seems like a long time until you think about the couples that have been married 60 or more years! Jan says we'll still be riding our bikes then. I'm not so sure!
The Rock Island ride was on the 12th. For our anniversary we were going to ride to Monmouth and back - 32 miles. I thought I could do it. It was a beautiful day! But I was too tired. We rode about 7 miles and I knew I would never get there AND back, so we turned around. Fourteen miles was enough. The company was good, my legs just wouldn't do it.
After a shower we got in the car and went to Macomb to develop pictures, eat and go to the auto store. It was a good evening! I hope we get to that 60 mark! And maybe we'll get to Monmouth on a different night!

Rock Island Bike Trail
The name is misleading! The trail really goes from Peoria to Toulon. It is named after the railroad that used to go where the trail is today. It was a nice ride but not our favorite. The path is crushed limestone. It was very well packed, but we still couldn't go really fast on it. I hardly ever left the 2nd gear. Not a lot of ups and downs and plenty of shade and not too many people. And not a lot to see except wild flowers and corn and beans, but it was shady most of the way so it was a good ride.
We went to Peoria for our yearly free cholesterol check. Jan does this everyonce in a while because at one time his cholesterol was high. I agreed to check mine yearly. Of course the nurse administering the test told him his numbers were perfect. Where did that leave mine? He really tries to keep his cholesterol in check. I try a little, but I just can't give up the Hardee's hamburgers and lots of other stuff! I eat a lot of vegetables, but I have to put butter/margarine on them. I just can't do the fat free stuff. So....I was pretty nervous when it was my turn to hear my results. Actually...they weren't too bad. My triglycerides were a little over, but the other two (good and bad cholesterol) levels were within the normal range! Whew!!! So we went to McDonalds after the testing!
Then on to the ride. We actually began in Alta where there is a parking lot and bathrooms. We were in new territory. The first town after that was Dunlap - very nice town, then on to Princeville. We saw a restaurant but we weren't really hungry yet, so we rode on. That town has really wide streets! I asked a lady what the next town was and how far it was. She said maybe 9 miles to Wyoming. I figured I could do that so we set out. At the end of 8 miles we didn't see anything, nor at the end of 9 so we turned around, knowing Wyoming was surely just up the trail. It was a hard decision. But we were suddenly very tired and hungry, and looking at 9 miles back to Princeville!
When we finally got there, we went to the little restaurant we had seen earlier. It turned out to be the high-lite of the day! We were there at 1:45. (They closed at 2:00!) And they also told us that all the power was off in the town except for a few places like theirs! Thank you God! And the food was delicious! It was called Coop's restaurant and it said something about keeping it simple on the outside. We would go back again!
The last 10 miles back to the car were long. We had already ridden 29 miles. By the time we reached the car we were at 39. Way more than I usually ride! And then we had to put the bikes on the car and drive an hour home! However....the bikes went on much easier than usual. Maybe we are getting the hang of it. I fell asleep on the way home.
When we got home, there was time for a quick shower, a sandwich, then off to Bible Study, ice cream and home to bed. Boy was I tired!

I can't believe I finally talked some people into reading my blog, and then I haven't written anything new. In fact, we haven't hardly ridden our bikes since the trip to the Fox River! Tonight we went for a ride out in Warren Countey, and boy, am I out of shape. We rode 11 miles out and around town with very few hills and my legs were almost wobbly when we quit. Jan was tired, too, bu then he rode 8 miles home from the farm before supper and then 11 more with me. We have a couple more trips planned for next week. Hope the weather holds.
So what have I been doing? One week I went to CIY (Christ in Youth) with high schoolers at SIU. What a great week! I did go to the athletic center and exercise every day. They have a huge gym floor that divides into like 5 full basketball courts, an upper and a lower track, many exercise bikes and tread mills, plus another gym, a huge pool, raquet ball courts and who knows what else. And it is air conditioned! You still work up a sweat, though and then you have to walk back to the dorm in the heat! One day I walked around the lake instead of going to the guym. It was about 2.5 miles, shady, black top path, a little smelly, but a nice walk!
I've also been babysitting my 2 year old grandson, blowing bubbles, swinging on the porch swing, reading books, building towers....whatever his heart desired! It was fun...I was tired! We took him home on Tuesday and now I am going back on Thursday so mom and dad can go to a Cardinals game. I think I will have both boys. That should be a challenge. It's been a while! But I am looking forward to it.
More next week after we ride!
